How to read the COT report

Net position

Long minus short contracts of the group. Shown also as a share of open interest, so a small and a large market can be compared.

COT index

Where the latest net position sits between the lowest (0) and highest (100) of the past 52 weeks. Each market page adds the 3-year index.

Extremes are context

Crowded positioning can last. The market pages show what prices did after past extremes, as history, not as signals.

Frequently asked questions

What is the COT report?

The Commitments of Traders is a weekly report from the US Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC). It shows how many futures contracts each type of trader holds long and short: hedge funds and CTAs (managed money), producers and merchants, asset managers, leveraged funds and dealers.

When is the COT report released?

Every Friday at 3:30 pm Eastern time, with positions as of the previous Tuesday. When a US federal holiday falls in the week, publication usually moves to the following Monday. MEDGE updates these pages after each release.

What is the COT index?

It places the latest net position between the lowest (0) and the highest (100) of a look-back window, here 52 weeks. Near 100 a group is as long as it has been in a year, near 0 as short. It describes how stretched positioning is, not where prices will go.

Which group does this page show?

For commodities, managed money (hedge funds and CTAs) from the Disaggregated report. For equity indices, Treasuries, currencies and VIX, leveraged funds from the Traders in Financial Futures report. Each market page also shows the other groups.

Are extreme readings a buy or sell signal?

No. Crowded positioning can persist for long periods and prices can keep moving in the same direction. Each market page shows what happened after past extremes, as historical context only. Nothing here is investment advice.
