Who is Ray Dalio
- Role
- Founder of Bridgewater Associates
- Fund
- Bridgewater Associates, founded 1975
- Investment style
- Global macro and risk parity; the 13F shows only the US-listed equity part.
- Known for
- The All Weather and risk-parity approach
Ray Dalio founded Bridgewater Associates from his New York apartment in 1975 and built it into one of the largest hedge funds in the world, known for its Pure Alpha macro strategy and for All Weather, the risk-parity approach he designed in 1996. His book Principles (2017) describes the firm’s culture of radical transparency.
Dalio completed the handover of control of Bridgewater to its board in 2022. Because most of the fund’s positions are in bonds, currencies and futures, its 13F – long US stocks and ETFs – shows only a slice of what it holds.

How to read 13F data
A 13F filing lists the US-listed stocks, ETFs and some options a manager held at the end of a quarter. It is filed up to 45 days after the quarter ends, so positions may have changed since. It does not show short positions, bonds, cash, foreign-listed shares or private investments, so for many funds it is only part of the picture.
