Warren Buffett, born in Omaha in 1930, studied under Benjamin Graham at Columbia and ran his own investment partnerships before taking control of Berkshire Hathaway, then a struggling textile company, in 1965. He turned it into a conglomerate that owns businesses outright – insurance, railways, energy – and a large portfolio of listed stocks.
His annual letters to shareholders are among the most read texts in investing. In May 2025 he announced that he would step down as chief executive at the end of the year, with Greg Abel taking over; he remained chairman.
- •Buying wonderful companies at fair prices and holding them for decades
- •Large, long-held stakes in Apple, American Express, Coca-Cola and Bank of America
- •A ten-year bet, won in 2017, that an S&P 500 index fund would beat a selection of hedge funds
How to read 13F data
A 13F filing lists the US-listed stocks, ETFs and some options a manager held at the end of a quarter. It is filed up to 45 days after the quarter ends, so positions may have changed since. It does not show short positions, bonds, cash, foreign-listed shares or private investments, so for many funds it is only part of the picture.
